Operation Escalation
The Strike Cruiser Praetorian of Caliban drops out of the warp and into the Lesser Amicus cluster. A few seconds
later the two escorting frigates drop in next to the cruiser. Task force Resolution quickly formed up and stood waiting for
orders.
Brother-Master Alacanon strides onto the battle bridge as the final checks are completed. Captain Martin turns
to him and speaks. “The system is clear and all ships have reported, Brother-Master Alacanon. We have stood down from
general alert and await your orders?”
“Proceed to the fourth planet. We will rendezvous with the ships
there.” He turns and leaves the bridge to complete his own preparations. As he moves down the small corridor to the
chapel his mind relaxes. This planet may offer us the opportunity for some rest and training, he thinks to himself.
As
one the ships move forward. The frigates assume lead and trailing positions with an ease speaking of many years of training.
In a few hours the fourth planet is in sight. The call is given to assemble the senior staff in the wardroom
Brother-Master
Alacanon, Epistolary Claudius and the remainder of the command staff gather in the wardroom of the ship. The mood is relaxed
as these men had served together many years on this current mission and knew what to expect. As was customary Alacanon speak
first, “Praise be to the Emperor for our safe passage through the warp.”
The gathered Battle Brothers
intone the reply “He is ever vigilant and watches over his chosen”.
Claudius stood to speak next. “We
have come to Amicus to meet supply ships sent from our brothers on the Rock. We shall take on replacements as well, and spend
a few months here to train them to our standards. We have chosen this planet due to the remote location of this cluster. The
population is small and we are free to use most of the planet for our needs.”
Alacanon spoke again. “You
know your duties. Go with the blessings of the Eternal Emperor and the Lion.”
The assembled brothers leave, all
but Claudius and Alacanon. Claudius breaks the silence between them first. “There is something not right here Brother.
I feel the population is uneasy, and there is something else, something in the background that slips through my attempts to
bring it into focus. It is as if my efforts are being actively countered.”
Alacanon tilts his head slightly and
answers “I too have felt as we were drawn here, as if the Emperors will directs us. I shall send a small party down
to the planet first. They can reconnoiter the area and report anything they find. Send for Brother-Sergeant Nathan.”
Sergeant
Nathan, the commander of the scout force, reports to the wardroom at once. Alacanon tells Nathan “Gather a reconnaissance
team. You are going down to the planet ahead of the rest of the command. Maintain a low profile. Assemble in the flight deck
in thirty minutes. Nathan merely nods and moves to gather his men.
The fourth planet of the Amicus Cluster was not unknown to the Imperium. It was just so far out that it was listed as
a minor system in the charts. The Imperial Governor maintained a modest PDF and several generations ago some tanks were sent
to bolster the garrison. Out here on the fringe it went unnoticed by most of the warring factions.
This was just the
reason the Inner Circle had chosen it for this rendezvous. The Ultramarines and the Black Templars had been seen scouting
the last two systems the Dark Angels had used for supply, and the Inquisition was with them. The Inner Circle saw no reason
to involve them in the hunt.
Sergeant Nathan moved among the eager scouts, selecting the best and most promising. All
the forces Scouts were all known to him. He had trained them all personally and was aware of their strengths and weaknesses.
Since he didn’t know the situation on the planet he gathered a variety of skills and weapons in his team. Since stealth
and speed were needed he left the heavy weapons behind, except for a sniper. He reassured the rest that they would be needed
and to remain vigilant.
His troops were assembled on the flight deck near an Imperial Guard Valkyrie. Sergeant Nathan
had found this method of insertion was best for these kinds of covert operations. As he completed the inspection and weapons
check the ships sensor officer handed him the preliminary scans. The fleet had slowed its approach to avoid detection. There
were indications of some orbital defenses but nothing the fleet couldn’t handle if the situation warranted it.
“All
right Brothers, Gather around me. Now here is the situation. We are going down to the planet ahead of rest of the company.
We are to have a look around and report back. You all know your jobs. Get loaded up.”
Brother Alacanon spoke
to the team, as was customary for teams leaving on difficult missions. “Brothers, I have complete faith and confidence
in you and your skills. Remember that information is more important engaging the enemy at this time. May the Emperor protect
you and speed you on your mission.”
“The Emperor will protect and watch over us,” intoned the brothers.
The Destroyer Mannheim entered the Lesser Amicus Cluster after exiting the warp only a day out from the planet. The ships
primary duty was to get the supply ships to the taskforce before adding itself to the ships already in the fleet. Once the
Captain was assured his charges had arrived safely he set out for the rendezvous point.
Chaplain Sariel paced in his
quarters. He was anxious to join the command. Their previous Chaplain had fallen during the last mission and he was to be
their new light in the darkness. This was to be his first company. This was not what was worrying him. He was also carrying
secret orders for the force commander. He was not privy to these orders, he was told he would be briefed with the rest of
the command. He too had an uneasy feeling gnawing at him ever since the ship dropped out of the warp.
The Mannheim
joined the fleet the next day. Chaplain Sariel led the new Battle Brothers to the Praetorian of Caliban. The Brothers found
their new squads and began the process of integration. Chaplain Sariel was greeted by Master Alacanon and Epistolary Claudius.
As Sariel handed the sealed package to Alacanon a wave of enlightenment swept over them. They all discussed the uneasy feelings
they shared. They all agreed that something was going on that needed further investigation. Again the senior staff was summoned
to the ward room.
“We have information that a Fallen Angel is concealing himself on this planet. This explains
the disturbances we have all felt. It appears that he is massing some kind of force around him, but the size and type is unknown.
I will direct Sergeant Nathan to redirect his efforts towards locating this filth. We must prepare for an assault.”
The
other brothers nodded in agreement, grim smiles on their faces. None of them had faced a Fallen before. Sariel was looking
forward to his first pearl. The briefing broke up as the staff moved to make ready for their assignments.
Alacanon
looked to senior Techmarine Simms, who came to speak to the Master. “It is time to awaken Brothers Samial and Oberon.
I feel they will be needed before we are through here. A nagging voice is telling me there is more here than we have been
led to believe. Begin the rituals of awakening.”
“It shall be done. May the Emperor guide my hand. The
Brothers shall be with you again.”
“All is well then. It has been too long since I have spoken with the
enshrined brothers. I believe their counsel will be beneficial.”
Alacanon looked to the staff as they filed out
of the ward room. All would do their duty for the company, the Lion and the Emperor, of that there was no doubt. He breathed
a silent prayer to the Emperor that they would all be here when this was done. Then he banished all such thoughts from his
mind and went to find Nathan.
