Operation Escalation - Continued
Kill Team, part 2
Sergeant Nathan looked down to valley floor to where the Guardsmen
were already beginning to rally. It would not be long before they were ready to pursue them again. He had to get some distance
between them.
“Tanaka, move out. Close up, move quickly.”
Brother Alacanon paced the bridge
of the Praetorian of Caliban as the reports came in. It did not sound to him like the Guardsmen were anything more than a
random patrol. It was unfortunate that Nathan had to engage them but it was done now. The die was cast.
“Move
the fleet into low orbit. Prepare the troops for a ground assault. Position the ships for orbital support. I’ll be in
the wardroom, inform the staff of my position”
The Captain of the cruiser snapped to attention, “Yes sir,
Brother-Master”
Chaplain Sariel moved among the troops of the assault squads. They all admired his special
assault pack, the Wings of Caliban. Though not actually wings they did have wings etched into the sides and several new attachments.
Sariel was anxious to test them out.
The squads vied with each other for the honor of fighting alongside the new Chaplain.
They knew he would lead them to victory.
Tanaka spotted the remains of an old settlement. A few crumbling buildings
were all that were left. But there was a bridge there, the first he had seen since this rushing stream had blocked their path.
Heavy rain in the mountains had swollen this dry creek bed into a raging torrent. He stopped and waited for the rest of the
scouts to catch up.
Sergeant Nathan looked over the area with his experienced eye. He detected movement in one of the
buildings. Then he saw a curl of smoke from behind the other one. He knew the Guardsmen were well behind him so this was not
them. Sergeant Nathan signaled his men to gather to him.
As he gathered his men together a figure walked out onto the
bridge. He was a Guardsman, but not the regular kind. He carried a Hellgun and was heavily armored. They must be an armored
fist squad. This would not be so easy.
+ Alpha Leader to command. More enemy encountered.
Moving to neutralize. +
Sergeant Vasiliy slammed his fist into the Voxcaster on the table. “Damn that
Khan, he’s late. And out of comms ranges. And me stuck here without a vehicle or supplies. I’d of thought Wornt
would have him straightened out by now.” He stalked out of the building and strode out onto the bridge. The rest of
the squad looked at each other and shrugged.
Suddenly the room was filled with flying fragments and bolter rounds.
The
IG had terrible luck with the die. Several 1’s for activation followed by some hot dice for Nathan led to the Scouts
reaching an assault position unseen.
Sergeant Nathan saw that his team had infiltrated the Guard position without
a hitch. He put his hand on Tribeaudu’s shoulder and nodded to him.
Tribeaudu aimed just above the neck piece
of the armored sergeant. “Give me the strength to slay our enemies, my Emperor” and squeezed the trigger. The
Sergeants head exploded in a spray of blood and bone as the Adamantium needle pierced his left eye.
Missed his
armor save!
+ Alpha Leader to command, we have engaged another force. +
Tribeaudu
turned his attention to the building. He and Sorenson poured fire into the building as Nathan took the rest of team into action.
Two Guardsmen ran out of the side door only to be cut down mid-stride. They followed the rest into the building.
The
Scouts tossed frag grenades through every door and window of the building followed by fire from their bolt pistols. Sergeant
Nathan strode through door with his power sword blazing with energy. The first Guardsman raised his Hellgun to fire as Nathan
sword sliced through the barrel and down into the armored breastplate. With the grace of centuries of experience the sword
swung back and through the neck of a second Guardsman. The rest of the squad rushed in through windows and doors, swords swinging
and pistols blazing. In seconds a half a dozen Guardsmen lay at their feet, shattered and broken.
Sporadic fire broke
out from the second building. Sergeant Nathan ignored it and led the squad out of the back of the building. They raced across
the bridge and into the cover beyond.
The Armored fist troopers left staggered out into the clearing. Just
then Lieutenant Khan came into the settlement. He looked around the carnage and told the remaining troopers “you are
coming with me. We must pursue these Marines.”
“Brother-master, we have detected another ship moving
rapidly towards the planet.”
